BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange‘s presenting season is an integral part of our core work in developing emerging and mid-career artists. Our dedication to presenting new work, work-in-progress, and work in a critical phase of development and experimentation reflects our mission to support artists rather than outcomes. This commitment is also reflected in our guest curated series that includes evenings curated by current and former Artists In Residence, as well as other guests from the community.
The 2017/18 Season features a series of open-studio and informal showings, and formal works-in-progress showcases created by our Artists In Residence (AIR) luciana achugar, Maria Bauman, Tanisha Christie, Catherine Galasso, Aya Ogawa, and Mariana Valencia. These performances offer artists and audiences multiple opportunities to share intentions, perceptions, and feedback in a way that is influential in the development of the artists’ work, and impactful for the audience’s insight and appreciation of the work.
The work presented by this season’s AIR and guest artists range from the provocative and socio-political to the formal, abstract, and compositional.

Hosted by Minka brooklyn
With bklyn boihood, Elliott Jerome Brown Jr., Taja Cheek, Jonathan Gonzalez, LifeCycle Biking, Natalie Sablon, and MINKA brooklyn
Thursday, November 2- Sunday, November 6
We are concerned with the expectation to bounce back, the practice of checking in, the call to take care.
How do you sound when you break?
What does it feel like to pay grief its rightful dues?
We want to know how you are doing.
Break Time brings together healing practitioners, musicians, visual and movement-based artists in a network of support and contemplation around grief. A transformative process that we all inevitably encounter, grief breaks and makes conceptions of our very being and the sensorial phenomena of time, memory and permanence. Break Time proposes that healing is an interdependent practice, and that no loss is too small to mourn.

Sight Lines: A Night of Performance in Dialogue with the Work of Michael Galasso
Curated Evening by Catherine Galasso (BAX AIR 2016/18)
Friday | April 13, 2018 @ 8pm
Saturday | April 14, 2018 @ 8pm
Sight Lines: A Night of Performance in Dialogue with the Work of Michael Galasso is a curatorial project by Catherine Galasso. Initiated to create new dialogues around the body of musical work by composer Michael Galasso, her late father, Catherine has invited six artists/pairings of varied aesthetic, artistic, and creative concerns to create 5-7 minute choreographic responses to unpublished recordings of his compositions. The responses offer new ways to illuminate how the continuous dialogue of music and movement—one that Michael was steeped in— take place across time and artistic tradition. A focused effort in meaningfully locating Michael’s work to audiences that may be unfamiliar with his musical contributions, Sight Lines works broadly to uncover layered artistic histories, while encouraging a personal and proactive approach to performance.

Teen Arts Conference
Saturday | April 21, 2018
Kickoff event at Irondale (open to the public): Wednesday | April 18, 2018
For over 15 years, Brooklyn Arts Exchange’s Teen Arts Conference (TAC) has provided teen performing artists (ages 13-18) across New York City and beyond an opportunity to come together as part of a wider cultural community of learners and practitioners. The free, day-long conference, for invited participants, offers a range of theater, dance, and movement workshops; panel discussions with professional artists, companies, and leaders in the field; and culminates with a Performance Gala in the BAX Theater.
Each year the conference engages in current and thought-provoking issues affecting both our political and performance worlds. It both implicitly and explicitly considers the intersection of arts and activism and the radical act we embody by working as creative collectives. This year, this intersection feels as urgent as ever and our conference will be informed by a very specific inquiry into dominant and counter-narratives and the power of storytelling. What stories are allowed by our society? Who gets to tell them? And what stories do we choose to tell as generative artists?
