Welcome to the 2016-2017 Performance Season

BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange‘s presenting season is an integral part of our core work in developing emerging and mid-career artists. Our dedication to presenting new work, work-in-progress, and work in a critical phase of development and experimentation reflects our mission to support artists rather than outcomes. This commitment is also reflected in our guest curated series that includes evenings curated by current and former Artists In Residence, as well as other guests from the community.

The 2016/17 Season features a series of open-studio and informal showings, and formal works-in-progress showcases created by our Artists In Residence (AIR) Kristine Haruna Lee, Marissa Perel, Ni’Ja Whitson, Tanisha Christie, Catherine Galasso, and Mariana Valencia. These performances offer artists and audiences multiple opportunities to share intentions, perceptions, and feedback in a way that is influential in the development of the artists’ work, and impactful for the audience’s insight and appreciation of the work.

The work presented by this season’s AIR and guest artists range from the provocative and socio-political to the formal, abstract, and compositional.

Stay in touch to learn about upcoming events and announcements.

What lies in the space between what can be healed and what we don’t know how to heal? How can we witness one another in this space?

April 7, 2017 | 8:00pm
April 8 | 7:00pm and 9:00pm

“ALBUM responds to archiving the self from a root query: I don’t know who will write a herstory about me, so I’m starting now to help them write it better. Through text, dance and song, ALBUM navigates a cartographic herstory written from places out of focus, from where history neglects to look.”

bathtub
Tanisha Christie (2016-17 BAX Artist in Residence)

Friday | April 21, 2017 @ 8pm
Saturday | April 22, 2017 @ 8pm

bathtub is a series of multimedia performance events of radical intimacy and surrender by inviting an audience to experience a bath with a Black Woman.

The impetus for this project came from the over-saturated mediated narrative of violence against Black bodies, particularly in the United States. No age, race, or economic status is exempt from its effects.

“There are few spaces as private as the bath. It is here I have pondered the complexity of my emotions, my femininity, my sorrow and blackness unmediated by others. It is the place where I become intimate with my rage and anguish. It is here that I replenish and refuel. With this work, I am inviting others into this space, to engage beyond the gaze and into a conversation of vulnerability.”

Memory Retrograde
Kristine Haruna Lee (2015-17 BAX Artist in Residence)

Friday | April 28, 2017 @ 8pm
Saturday | April 29, 2017 @ 8pm

A couple finds a strange ‘remembering’ object in the attic, and ponders over the possibility of having lived past lives together. The act of remembering conjures their younger selves, and they all mingle in simultaneity. Their ‘time travels’ take them to their past life in Venice 1515, an Egyptian Burial, the 1970’s, Ancient Greece, and a virtual reality forest some time in the far future. As memories epically span generations and landscapes, one couple’s trauma is brought to light and replayed over and over again through all these layers of time and space as they figure out how to deal with a single tragedy that haunts their lives.
